Battle and the fifteen parishes around have produced, over the years, an exceptional number of people worth commemorating one way or another. There have been painters and authors, actors, kings, scientists and campaigners of all sorts over the centuries. There is even a martyr from the Elizabethan age. Not all of them were admirable people, of course – there has been a fair share of the misbehaved!
